THE Lae District Court has ordered two women to pay K500 compensation to another woman they assaulted for having a relationship with one of the defendant’s son.
Magistrate Tera Dawai fined Erento Silas, 45, and Jobbo Silas, 37, from Gabsongkeg village in Huon District, Morobe, K300 each in default six months jail.
“It is normal for a boy and a girl to be in a relationship or have a relationship to find their partner in life,” Dawai told the women.
“We as parents and guardians are here to correct, advise them and provide counselling for them, not assault them.”
The court heard that the two women assaulted the victim for being in a relationship with Erento’s son, 19.
Erento told the court that as a widow she has struggled over the years to bring her son up to secondary school and did not want him to get distracted by such activities until he finished his education.
“I assaulted my son first and then the victim after finding out that my son was spending some nights with the victim after school and did not come home.”
Police prosecutor Const Moses Samuel said on Nov 3 at Tanam market the two accused approached the victim and assaulted her.
It was alleged that Jobbo punched the victim and she fell on the ground.
While lying on the ground, they punched and kicked her until she bled heavily and sustained serious injuries on her face.
The victim was later taken to Wampar Health Centre by her family members and then reported the matter to police.
The court gave the women a month to pay the compensation and fines.
