THE Women’s National Soccer League has been deferred to allow time for three more sides to join the eight-team competition, according to an official.
Competition manager Simon Koima said the other three slots were yet to be filled by Lae teams with Port Moresby already meeting its quota of four sides. “Lae has only one team so we will give it another week or so for the other three to confirm their participation.”
He said there had been interest from clubs last year and they keen on reactivating that interest.
“Hopefully by Friday, we will make a decision on when to actually start the competition.
“Matches will be played in Lae and Port Moresby with teams to face each other twice before the finals. The playoff format is yet to be finalised.”
Meanwhile, Koima has called on the corporate community to sponsor teams.
“Our women are the Oceania champions so we need to drum up interest and show that they can have a national competition in the country,” he said. “Some teams were interested to participate last year but the instability in funding was a factor.
“The fee for expressions of interest is K5,000 while the application fee is K10,000.
“It would be nice to see business houses and individuals sponsor a women’s team in Lae or Port Moresby.”
