PAPUA New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) general secretary Pius Letenge says selections for the women’s train-on-squad were made by their technical team in Lae and Port Moresby.
Letenge told The National yesterday that the technical team selected the players after consultations with club managers from the Southern and Northern Conferences.
“The criteria used to select the players included performance and skills assessment,” he said.
“The other criterion that the technical team considered while doing selections was the experience of the players as well as consultations with their respective team coaches. While we welcome critics of the selections, the development and training of the national team must go forward.”
Meanwhile, Letenge said the coaches who had been appointed to oversee training for the train-on-squad had not signed contracts but rather stepped in as volunteers.
“The women coaches have experiences in leading the national team in international tournaments,” he said.
“They will be running the training and trimming the squad to a reasonable number and that’s when we’ll look at making a permanent appointment for the role of head coach.”
