DOUGLAS Doa is contesting the mayor’s seat in Mt Hagen city, Western Highlands, which was once held by his late father Raphael Doa.

Doa is among 31 candidates contesting the mayor’s seat.

Doa said the city was much different when his father was mayor from 1989 to 1992.

Mt Hagen was dubbed the cleanest city and had minimum law and order problems.

He said when his father passed away in 1993, the image of the city changed with criminal activities gradually growing. Business houses and government departments such as lands moved to other places such as Goroka in Eastern Highlands.

“I put my hands up to re-direct the course of this city to where it used to be during my father’s regime,” Doa said.

He said the city needed a good leader with vision to restore that image and attract investors.

He wants to make sure that business houses operate with minimum disruptions and to expand their operation in the city.

“I want to make sure people coming to the city feel secure and safe to move around,” he said.

He plans to restore facilities such as street lights, public toilets, recreation areas which his late father built.
