Youths eyed in fight to cut crime

Highlands

RESOURCING youths in the Highlands to help eliminate law and order issues in the region was one of the resolutions passed during a regional governors’ conference last week in Enga.
Other resolutions include the resealing of the Highlands Highway, the transfer of powers to the provincial Works Department and the promotion of local produce. Addressing governors from the seven Highlands provinces in Wabag on Thursday, Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas said the Government needed to strengthen and empower provincial governments to deliver national and provincial policies.
“We are close with the people than them. Therefore we need to be resourced and equipped properly to achieve all our key development policies,” he said.
Governors present included Sir Peter Ipatas (Enga), Paias Wingti (Western Highlands), Peter Numu (Eastern Highlands), Michael Dua (Chimbu), William Powi (SHP), Philip Undialu (Hela) and Dr William Tongamp (Jiwaka).
They were concerned about the state of the Highlands Highway and law and order issues in all provinces.
Inter Government Relations Minister Kevin Isifu, who chaired the meeting, said the Government
would look into the concerns raised, including funding and road maintenance.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said work on the Highlands Highway would start in two months’ time.
